PhotoVoice Community Projects (U.K. model)

PhotoVoice’s vision is for a world in which no one is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard.

PhotoVoice’s mission is to build skills within disadvantaged and marginalized communities. To achieve this, we utilize innovative participatory photography and digital storytelling methods. These skills enable individuals to represent themselves and create tools for advocacy and communication. Through this, and through developing partnerships, we deliver positive social change.

What is PhotoVoice? (Participatory Photography)

PhotoVoice is a group analysis combining photography and grassroots social action, and is commonly used in the field of community development, public health and education. Participants are asked to represent their communities or express their points of view by photographing scenes that highlight identified themes. Common themes may include community concerns, community assets, or health barriers and facilitators. These photographs are collaboratively interpreted, and narratives can be developed that explain how the photographs highlight a particular theme. These narratives are used to better understand the community and help plan health or social programs that address community needs.

tierrasPhotoVoice is often used by marginalized groups to provide insight into how they conceptualize their circumstances and their hopes for the future. As a form of community consultation, PhotoVoice attempts to bring the perspectives of those “who lead lives that are totally different from those traditionally in control of the means of imaging the world” into the policy and decision making process (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photovoice)
